Great Photos, Zero Sales: What’s Wrong With Your Product Page

Great photos aren't enough: copied descriptions, missing info and poorly handled reviews sink your product page. What to fix to sell more.

Great Photos, Zero Sales: What’s Wrong With Your Product Page

You’ve invested in a photographer, or at least a decent phone and a lightbox, and the photos on your product page look good. Clean background, solid framing, several angles. And the page still doesn’t convert. If that sounds familiar, the problem is almost never the photo: it’s everything around it that you left as it was.

A product page sells when it answers questions before the customer has to ask them. The photo opens the door, but what closes the sale is the copy, the concrete details, the reviews, and how fast all of it loads.

A description copied from the manufacturer doesn’t sell, and it works against you

It’s the quick fix when you’re uploading a hundred products in an afternoon: grab the supplier’s text, paste it into PrestaShop, WooCommerce or Shopify, and move on to the next one. The problem is that same text is sitting on dozens of other stores selling the same thing. To Google it’s duplicate content, and to the customer it’s copy that never explains why to buy from you instead of the store next door.

Every product page doesn’t need to be a piece of writing, but it does need to speak to the actual questions a reader has. If writing a distinct description for every product isn’t realistic by hand, AI tools for SEO-optimized content let you generate unique copy without copying the manufacturer or sitting down to write three hundred pages by hand.

The missing information is what decides the sale

Before buying, the customer has specific questions: what are the dimensions, is it compatible with what I already have, what’s in the box? If those answers aren’t on the page, most people don’t bother asking: they close the tab and look for a store that spells it out.

A specs table, a clear “what’s in the box” section, and a plain line about compatibility settle more doubts than any extra photo. It’s content work, not design work, which is exactly why it’s the thing that gets skipped.

Reviews: better none than badly handled

Genuine reviews help because they’re written by someone with nothing to gain from the sale. The problem shows up when the section hasn’t had a new review in months, or when it’s obvious the bad ones have been filtered out. That breeds more distrust than having no reviews at all.

If you have happy customers, asking for their feedback after purchase costs little and gives you real content for every page. Show reviews with intent: ask for them, moderate with judgement, and respond when something goes wrong instead of hiding it.

Fake urgency shows, and it costs you

The “only 2 left in stock” banner that’s always there, no matter how many times the page reloads, fools almost no one these days. Once the customer spots it, they start doubting the rest of the page too.

Real urgency looks different: stock that genuinely drops because the supplier has limited units, a delivery window that changes if you order before a specific time, an offer with a real expiry date. Without genuine urgency, don’t fake it: an honest page sells more than one that gets caught out on a second visit.

Unoptimised photos: slowing things down exactly where they shouldn’t

The same photo that helps sell can stop the sale if the file is several megabytes and the page is slow to load. The customer decides to buy at exactly the moment they have the least patience to wait for eight uncompressed images to render.

Compressing images, serving them in a modern format, and loading only what’s needed on the initial view is maintenance work, not photography work. If nobody checks it regularly, it piles up with every new product added. It’s one of the things we check when we handle online store maintenance and optimisation: there’s little point investing in traffic if the product page kills conversion before the cart.

    Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t my product page converting if the photos are good?

Because the photo only sparks initial interest; the buying decision depends on the copy, the details on dimensions and compatibility, the reviews, and how fast the page loads. If any of those elements fall short, a good photo won’t make up for it.

Is copying the manufacturer’s description onto my online store a problem?

Yes, for two reasons: Google may treat it as duplicate content because the same text appears on other stores, and the customer finds no reason to buy from you rather than a competitor. Rewriting each page with your own details, even briefly, fixes both problems.

Do “only X units left” banners actually help sell more?

Only if they’re real. A low-stock warning that always shows, with no connection to actual inventory, is easy to spot and undermines trust in the whole page. Urgency only works when the customer can verify it’s true.

None of these changes require rebuilding your store or throwing out the photos you already have. It’s a matter of going page by page to see what’s missing, what’s unnecessary, and what’s stalling conversion at the final step. If you’d like us to take a look at yours, feel free to get in touch to talk about your online store and we’ll see where to start.
