If Your Checkout Crashes on Black Friday, It’s Not Bad Luck

When someone tells us “my website is a bit slow, but it’s not a big deal,” they’re usually right: an informational website that takes an extra second to load is annoying, but it doesn’t stop making money. With an online store, the math is different. If checkout goes down for five minutes, those are five minutes of sales that never come back. That’s why maintaining a store on PrestaShop, WooCommerce or Shopify isn’t the same as maintaining a corporate website, even though the two can look similar on the surface.

A store has moving parts a regular website doesn’t

A services website is basically content on a page. If a plugin falls out of date, the worst that usually happens is it looks broken for a while. An online store, on the other hand, moves money: it charges cards, calculates tax, manages stock, connects with couriers and issues invoices. Each of those connections is a point that can break on its own, without you touching anything.

Payment gateways don’t warn you before they change something

Redsys, Stripe, PayPal and the other payment gateways update their APIs, change security requirements or retire old protocol versions on schedules that have nothing to do with you. If your store’s payment module doesn’t keep pace, one day the “pay” button simply stops working, and you probably find out because a customer emails you to complain, not because you saw an alert. This is exactly the kind of silent failure you want to catch before the customer does, and it’s where it makes sense to lean on AI-powered incident management tools that monitor checkout continuously instead of checking it once a month.

Payment plugins aren’t just any plugins

In WooCommerce and PrestaShop, a big chunk of the checkout logic lives inside third-party extensions: the gateway, shipping calculations, e-invoicing, country-by-country VAT handling. Updating WordPress or PrestaShop without checking whether those extensions are still compatible is the most common way to break a checkout that was working fine the day before. It’s not a rare or exotic failure — it’s what happens when you update without testing in a staging environment first.

PCI DSS isn’t a minor technical detail

Any store that processes card payments falls under the PCI DSS standard, designed to protect customer payment data. You don’t need to memorize the whole thing, but you do need to keep your software updated, use encrypted connections and avoid storing card data you have no business holding onto. Ignoring it isn’t just a legal risk — it’s a risk that a customer loses trust in your store the day something goes wrong.

A checkout outage doesn’t cost the same every day

An hour-long outage on a random Tuesday in February is annoying. The same outage during Black Friday, with most of the year’s traffic packed into a few hours, is a different story: every minute of downtime takes orders with it that won’t come back later, because the customer has already bought elsewhere. On top of that, traffic spikes can also bring the server down if the hosting isn’t sized to handle them, so maintenance ahead of a big campaign isn’t just about checking plugins — it’s about making sure the infrastructure can handle the load.

Shopify, PrestaShop and WooCommerce don’t split the workload the same way

On Shopify, the platform itself handles the server, most of the payment security and core updates, so that risk is largely taken off the store owner’s plate. On PrestaShop and WooCommerce, since it’s software installed on your own hosting, all of that falls on whoever maintains the store: updating the core, the plugins, the server, and keeping an eye on whether the gateways are still working. It gives you more control and is usually cheaper, but it demands active maintenance that comes bundled in on Shopify.

If you run a store on any of these three platforms and your maintenance amounts to “update whenever WordPress says so,” it’s worth checking what that maintenance actually covers. Our online store maintenance service focuses on exactly this: payment gateways, critical plugins and checks ahead of traffic spikes like Black Friday or sales season. If you’d like us to take a look at how your store is doing right now, you can get in touch and we’ll take a look together.

    Frequently asked questions

How often should you check an online store’s payment gateway?

A reasonable rule of thumb is at least once a month, and always before a campaign with heavy expected traffic like Black Friday or sales season. Gateways change technical requirements without notifying each store directly, so waiting for something to break before checking it usually turns out to be expensive.

Why does checkout break after updating WordPress or PrestaShop?

Because payment, shipping or invoicing plugins depend on a specific core version, and if you update without checking compatibility first, one of them can stop working. That’s why it’s worth testing updates in a staging environment before applying them to the live store.

Does a Shopify store need maintenance too?

Yes, though less than on PrestaShop or WooCommerce. Shopify takes care of the server and most of the payment security, but the store still needs review of installed apps, themes and checkout configuration, none of which update themselves.
